CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The top-ranked, top-seeded North Carolina field hockey team opens NCAA Tournament play on Friday at noon, hosting William & Mary in a first-round game at Karen Shelton Stadium in Chapel Hill. Michigan and Saint Joseph's face off in the second of the first-round games in Chapel Hill, and the winners meet Sunday at 1 p.m. for a spot in the NCAA semifinals.
The Tar Heels (19-0) are the No. 1 overall seed in the tournament for the first time since 2014 and are making their NCAA-record 35th appearance in the field. This year marks the 20th time that UNC has hosted NCAA Tournament games, but the first time in brand-new Shelton Stadium.
Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for students and children, and free for UNC students with a One Card.
William & Mary, the CAA champion, beat Monmouth 3-2 in overtime on Wednesday to advance out of the opening round and into a first-round game. The Tribe is 12-7 this season with an NCAA-high six of those wins coming in OT. UNC leads the series with William & Mary 24-3-2. The teams are meeting in NCAA play for the first time.
