Auburn Holds Off Tar Heels In OT, 86-81

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Unique Thompson scored 21 points and grabbed 18 rebound to lead Auburn to an 86-81 victory in overtime over North Carolina on Thursday night from the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.
Shayla Bennett paced North Carolina (8-5) with 19 points and eight assists, while Paris Kea and Stephanie Watts each had 16 points and Taylor Koenen added 13.
Thompson's double-double helped Auburn improve to 10-1 on the season. Janiah McKay matched Thompson with 21 points and Crystal Primm offered up 18 for the Tigers.
Auburn's Robyn Benton sent the game into overtime with a layup that knotted the game at 69-69 with 10 seconds left in regulation. The Tigers scored the first four points in the extra session and never relinquished the lead the rest of the way.
Kea came off the bench after missing the last three games and scored five points in the opening quarter to pin an early 21-18 lead on the Tar Heels after 10 minutes.
Auburn used a 9-0 run and benefited from UNC going scoreless for over five minutes of the second quarter to take the lead, 27-23, midway into the period. The Tar Heels scored only eight points in the quarter and trailed 34-29 at halftime.
Auburn led by as may as 11 points, 43-32, at the five minutes, 37 second mark of the third quarter, but UNC methodically cut its deficit down to just a single point heading to the fourth quarter trailing 47-46 after Watts knocked down a triple in the late stages of the period.
Watts connected again from distance in the fourth to put UNC ahead 63-59, but Auburn had an answer every step of the way to keep the Heels from winning a fourth-straight game.
Carolina hosts Howard on Friday, Dec. 28 at 2 p.m.
