Six Tar Heels Earn All-ACC Academic Honors

Six North Carolina field hockey players have been named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Team, announced Friday by the league. Tar Heels named to the squad, which recognizes combined academic and athletic performance, were Marissa Creatore, Malin Evert, Morgan Goetz, Feline Guenther, Ashley Hoffman and Meredith Sholder.

Evert, Goetz and Hoffman were juniors on the 2017 roster, Creatore and Guenther sophomores and Sholder a freshmen. All started or were key contributors as the Tar Heels won the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship, the 20th in program history, and reached the final four for the 22nd time overall and ninth year in a row.

Creatore is from Chapel Hill and is majoring in psychology. She started all 23 games at forward for the Tar Heels last season, scoring six goals and adding eight assists.

Evert is from Bad Schwartau, Germany, and is majoring in sociology. A third-team All-America selection in 2017, she tied for the team lead in goals with 11.

Goetz is from Cary, N.C., and is majoring in biomedical engineering. She started every game on the back line in 2017 and was honored with the team's Unsung Hero Award.

Guenther is from Hamburg, Germany, and plans to major in business. In her first year on the team after transferring to UNC, she started every game in the midfield and score four goals.

Hoffman is from Mohnton, Pa., and is majoring in sociology. A first-team All-America selection and the ACC Defensive Player of the Year in 2017, she anchors the UNC back line and was selected as the ACC Championship MVP and a finalist for the Honda Award.

Sholder, from Alburtis, Pa., is majoring in biology. In her first year on the squad, she played in all 23 games at forward, starting eight and contributing seven goals and four assists.

Louisville's Nicole Woods was honored as the 2017 ACC Field Hockey Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

To be considered for the All-ACC Academic teams, conference student-athletes must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average for the fall semester, as well as a cumulative 3.0 over the course of their college careers.
