Carolina Upended By Miami

CHAPEL HILL - Despite a game-high 31 points from Paris Kea, North Carolina lost 92-72 to Miami on Sunday in an Atlantic Coast Conference women's basketball game from Carmichael Arena.
Kea's fourth 30-point effort of the season was an efficient outing, making 11-of-16 shots from the field and knocked down all five of her three-point attempts. She is the first player to score at least 30 points against Miami since Georgia Tech's Ty Marshall on Feb. 24, 2013.
Janelle Bailey scored 14 points and Jamie Cherry had 12 for North Carolina (14-9, 4-6 Atlantic Coast Conference).
Erykah Davenport paced Miami (16-7, 6-4) with 20 points and 11 rebounds. The balanced-scoring attack saw Mykea Gray offer up 14 points, Sarah Mortensen scored 13 points, Shaneese Bailey had 11 points and Kelsey Marshall finished with 10.
The Hurricanes' reserves outscored Carolina's bench 31-5 in winning for the third-straight time against the Tar Heels.
Carolina trailed 23-19 after the first quarter and saw its deficit grow by halftime, 45-36, after getting outrebounded, 24-18, and allowed Miami to hold a 9-2 edge in points off turnovers.
Kea had 19 points in the first half to keep Carolina in the game, while Gray, Miami's leading scorer at 12.0 points a game, had her season average midway through the second period.
The Hurricanes led 73-52 going into the final quarter after scoring the final 10 points in the third quarter. Miami made nearly 67 percent of its shots in the period to take control of the game.
UNC scored the first five points of the fourth quarter, but a 15-5 spurt from the Hurricanes sealed their victory as they led by as many as 26, 88-62.
The basketball program welcomed back over 50 former players and staff for Alumni Weekend. The 1998 team that won the ACC Championship and advanced to the NCAA Elite 8 was recognized between the first and second quarters.
Carolina hosts Virginia Tech on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
