Tar Heels Begin Outdoor Season With UCF Black & Gold Challenge

ORLANDO, Fla. - The 2018 North Carolina track and field outdoor season gets underway this weekend as the Tar Heels travel south to Florida Friday and Saturday for the UCF Black and Gold Challenge at the UCF Track and Field Complex.
The two-day meet will feature 22 schools, including Alabama State, Bethune-Cookman, Central State, Dartmouth, Embry-Riddle, Fairleigh Dickinson, Florida A&M, Florida Southern, Florida State, Florida Tech, Jacksonville, Kentucky, Lehigh, Maine, North Carolina, Ohio State, South Carolina, Stetson, Tennessee State, UCF, UConn and USF.
This is the first of four trips the Tar Heels will make to the sunshine state, as they will also head south for the Hurricane Collegiate Invitational in Miami, Fla., on April 14 - also the site of this season's ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championships (May 10-12). The teams will visit the state one final time in May for the NCAA East Preliminary Round from May 23-26 in Tampa, Fla.
The Black & Gold Challenge gets underway Friday at 11 a.m. with Emily Godwin beginning her final outdoor campaign in the women's javelin. Jared Martin and Will Eskew will follow in the men's section. At noon, Emerson Porter and Anna Eaton will compete in the women's pole vault, with Eskew, Liam Dixon and Bailey Frederick in the men's competition. Then at 1 p.m., Jill Shippee and Alex Cooke will compete in the women's hammer to wrap up the first day of competition for Carolina.
The meet will resume Saturday with the women's discus at 10 a.m. and the running events getting started at 11 a.m. with the women's 4x100 relay. In the field events, The Tar Heels will have individuals representing in the discus, long jump, shot put and high jump. Then on the track, Carolina athletes will compete in the men's 4x100, both sections of the short hurdles, the 400 meters, the men's 800 meters, the 200 meters and both sections of the 4x400.Â
