March 29, 2018 | Track & Field
RALEIGH, N.C. - The University of North Carolina track and field teams begin two weeks of competition close to home this weekend at the Raleigh Relays on the campus of N.C. State from March 30-31. Once again, the meet will be one of the largest UNC will compete in this year, featuring over 120 teams and more than 2,000 collegiate, professional and high school athletes.
The Tar Heels will send 33 athletes and four relay teams to take on the nation's best at the Paul H. Derr Track & Field Facility, with 11 making season debuts including 2017 indoor All-ACC honorees Morgan Ilse and Caroline Alcorta.
The meet will feature 26 different events held across the two days of competition. Friday's slate kicks off with the first of seven sections of the women's 5,000 meters at 9 a.m. and will conclude with the second of two sections of the women's 10,000 meters at 10:31 p.m. Events to be contested Friday include the 100-meter hurdles, 110-meter hurdles, 100 meters, 400 meters, 1,500 meters, 5,000 meters, 10,000 meters, sprint medley relay, 3,000-meter steeplechase, discus, shot put, high jump, long jump and men's pole vault.
The meet will resume Saturday with the women's hammer at 9:45 a.m. and the third section of the men's 10,000 meters at 10 a.m. Events to be contested on Saturday will include the 200 meters, 800 meters, 10,000 meters (third section), 400-meter hurdles, 4x100, 4x200, 4x400, 4x800, 4x1500, triple jump, hammer, javelin, and the women's pole vault.
The Raleigh Relays are one of only two meets the Tar Heels will travel to within the North Carolina borders this season. Carolina will also visit Duke on April 7 for the Battle of the Blues against the Blue Devils and the Wolverines of Michigan. These will be the best opportunities for local fans to watch the Tar Heels compete due to the ongoing construction of the program's new outdoor track and field complex.

Several other Tar Heels also set lifetime bests at the meet hosted by South Carolina, including sophomore Liam Dixon and freshman Emerson Porter in the pole vault, senior Blake Dodge in the 1,500 meters and freshmen Lindsey Lanier and Ian Moini in the 3,000 meters.
IN THE RANKINGS
After just two meets, the Tar Heels hold 14 top-5 times/marks in the ACC, 10 top-25 times/marks in the east region and 13 times/marks that rank top-50 in the country.
