Parkinson Homers as Tar Heels Blank Longwood
April 10, 2018 | Softball
CHAPEL HILL – Led by the bats of freshmen Megan Dray and Sierra Parkinson, and Brittany Pickett in the circle, Carolina shut out Longwood, 3-0, on Tuesday evening for the Tar Heels' seventh shutout of the season.
Dray drove in the game-winning run in the fourth inning on an RBI-single while Parkinson slugged her first career home run in the sixth to ensure the Carolina victory. Kiani Ramsey went 2-for-3 to extend her hitting streak to 10 games. Pickett threw her 22nd complete game with seven strikeouts, improving her record to 21-6 on the season. With the win, the Tar Heels improve to 23-19 while Longwood falls to 24-13.
Carolina threatened with three runners in scoring position in the first three innings, but could not come around to score. Taylor Wike doubled to right-center in the first. Ramsey singled up the middle in the third before the Lancers intentionally walked Wike. After a pair of stolen bases and a Landers' miscue, Carolina had two in scoring position but a liner to the pitcher ended the inning.
After three scoreless innings, Carolina broke free for the first run of the day in the fourth. Berlynne Delamora drew a one-out walk, bringing in pinch runner Brittany West. Parkinson put down a sac-bunt to advance the runner, before Dray sent an RBI-double to right-center for the 1-0 lead.
Longwood did not quit, threatening with the bases loaded and one out in the sixth. The Lancers strung together a pair of walks and a single to left by Karleigh Donovan to load the bases. However, Pickett doled her seventh strikeout and Wike snagged the popup to strand the runners.
In the bottom of the frame, Delamora drew her second walk of the game before Parkinson rocketed her first career home run to left for the 3-0 Carolina victory.
Pickett went the distance for the win while Longwood's relief pitcher, Sydney Backstrom took the loss.
Carolina travels to JMU Wednesday before hosting NC State at Anderson Stadium for a three-game series Friday, Saturday and Monday.
