LAST TIME OUT
Last weekend, the Tar Heels split competition between the Virginia Challenge at Lannigan Field and the Duke Invitational in Durham, N.C. The big highlight of the weekend came from freshman Jill Shippee (Clifton Park, N.Y.) who broke Laura Gerraughty's 2003 UNC hammer throw record. Shippee threw for 207-4 (63.19 meters) on her first attempt at the Virginia Challenge to break the record.
Her throw on the day was also the second-best in the ACC, the fourth in the east region and the 16th-best in the NCAA this season.
At the Duke Invitational, redshirt-sophomore Jared Martin shattered his lifetime best in the javelin, throwing for 211-3 (64.40 meters) on his sixth and final attempt to break the 200-foot barrier for the first time in his career.
