Four From UNC Named To All-ACC Academic Team
June 21, 2018 | Men's Golf, Academics
Four members of the UNC men's golf team have earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic honors for 2017-18, the ACC announced Thursday. Ben Griffin, Joshua Martin, Jose Montaño and William Register were selected for the All-ACC Academic Team, which recognizes outstanding academic and athletic performance.
Griffin is from Chapel Hill and graduated in May after majoring in economics.
Martin is a rising senior from Pinehurst, N.C., who is majoring in exercise and sport science.
Montaño, a senior on the 2017-18 squad, is from Cochabamba, Bolivia, and is majoring in business administration.
Register, from Burlington, N.C., also graduated in May and majored in economics.
Register was one of seven players on the 28-member list honored for the third time. Griffin and Montaño were recognized for the second time.
NC State's Stephen Franken was named the ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The award is named after Rod Myers, Duke's men's golf coach from 1973-2007.
Duke led all programs with five golfers on the academic team, while UNC had four golfers and Clemson and NC State had three recognized.
Griffin is one of 10 members of the team who also earned All-ACC honors this season.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one's academic career for undergraduate students. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
