Old Town Collegiate Invitational Day One
Tar Heels Tee Off Monday in Winston-Salem
September 23, 2018 | Men's Golf
First College Event at Old Town Club in 56 Years
Carolina returns to action on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 24-25, at the Old Town Club Collegiate Invitational hosted by Wake Forest.
Â
This is the first college golf tournament played at the Old Town Club since 1962.
Â
The Tar Heels are playing in their third event of the fall semester. UNC tied host Duke for second place at the Rod Myers Invitational and placed sixth at the Louisville Cardinal Challenge.
Â
A pair of freshmen have led UNC in the first two events. Ryan Burnett (Lafayette, Calif.) tied for third with a 5-under-par 211 at Duke and Dougie Ergood (Mount Laurel, N.J.) tied for fifth 6-under-207 in Louisville.
Â
Ergood and veteran starter Austin Hitt (Longwood, Fla.) are Carolina's scoring leaders through two events; Ergood has made a team-high 27 birdies and is averaging a team-best 70.33 strokes per round. Hitt, who was in the Tar Heel lineup in the 2017 and 2018 NCAA Championships, is next at 70.67. That's almost two full strokes below his career average.
Â
Sophomore Ryan Gerard (Raleigh) and seniors Preyer Fountain (Raleigh) and Joshua Martin (Pinehurst) round out the UNC lineup at Wake Forest. Burnett will also compete as an individual entry. Ergood, Hitt and Gerard have cracked the starting five in each of the three fall events to date.
Â
The field also includes host Wake Forest, East Carolina, East Tennessee State, Louisville, Loyola (Md.), Maryland, Notre Dame, Rutgers, Virginia Tech, West Virginia and Yale.
