Hitt, Gerard Post Top-10 Finishes
Tar Heel junior Austin Hitt finished sixth and sophomore Ryan Gerard tied for 10th to lead the University of North Carolina to a fourth-place finish Tuesday at the Old Town Club Collegiate hosted by Wake Forest at the Old Town Club.
The University of Louisville won the 54-hole event by a shot over Wake Forest. Louisville came into today's final round four shots behind the Deacons, but shot 11 under par today, led by individual medalist Matthias Schmid, who fired a 7-under-63. Schmid won the tournament at 18 under, three shots clear of Wake Forest's Eric Bae.
Hitt (Longwood, Fla.) shot 69-66-67 to finish 8-under-202 to lead the Tar Heels. Gerard (Raleigh, N.C.) shot 69-67-69 to finish at 5-under-205. It was Hitt's second top-10 finish in three events this season (he was also sixth at the Rod Myers Invitational).
Hitt bogeyed his first hole on Tuesday, then eagled the fourth and made birdies at eight and nine to complete the front side in 3 under. He made pars on all nine holes on the back side.
Three of Carolina's six players in the field shot under par in the third round and two shot even par. Hitt led with a 67, Gerard and Ryan Burnett (who was an individual entry) shot 69s and Dougie Ergood and Joshua Martin posted 70s.
Carolina returns to action Oct. 7-8 at the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Classic.
