SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Tiana Mangakahia's first career triple-double guided No. 12 Syracuse to a 90-77 victory over North Carolina Sunday afternoon from the Carrier Dome.
Paris Kea scored a team-leading 22 points for North Carolina (9-8, 0-3 Atlantic Coast Conference). Taylor Koenen tied her career-high with 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to register the sixth double-double of her career. Janelle Bailey and Stephanie Watts tossed in 16 points apiece.
Mangakahia, the ACC's assist leader, filled the stat sheet on Sunday with 34 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. Digna Strautmane added 14 points and Miranda Drummond had 13.
Syracuse (14-2, 3-0) set an ACC record in last year's meeting with 20 three-pointers down in Chapel Hill. The Orange picked up where they left off by knocking down eight in the opening quarter to grab an early 32-25 edge. Drummond made 3-of-4 from downtown in the opening 10 minutes, while Watts equaled her total with nine points to lead the visitors.
Strautmane canned another triple to begin the second quarter for SU to make it a double-digit lead, 35-25. Koenen led the Tar Heels with 13 first-half points, but a dozen buckets from three-point land staked the Orange to a 56-37 lead at intermission.
Carolina pieced together a 17-5 run out of halftime to cut Syracuse's lead down to 61-54. Bailey had three buckets and six points over the five-minute, eight-second spurt.
However, an early fourth-quarter layup from Emily Engstler put Syracuse back up 78-63 and led by double figures the rest of the way.
UNC held a 42-39 rebounding edge over the Orange.
Carolina is back home to host Wake Forest on Thursday at 7 p.m. The game will be carried on the Regional Sports Network.
