January 20, 2019 | Women's Basketball
CORAL GABLES, Florida - Miami held on for a 76-68 victory over North Carolina on Sunday in an Atlantic Coast Conference women's basketball game from the Watsco Center.
Stephanie Watts registered her 17th career double-double and first in over two years with 22 points and a career-high 15 rebounds for North Carolina (10-9, 1-4 Atlantic Coast Conference). Paris Kea had 10 points for the Tar Heels.
Beatrice Mompremier notched her 14th double-double of the year by scoring 18 points and hauling in 10 rebounds for Miami (16-4, 4-1). Mykea Gray had 17 points and Emese Hof added 11.
Behind 12 points from Gray, and a 21-0 Miami run, the Hurricanes led 27-8 after 10 minutes.
Watts guided the Tar Heels with 11 points in the first half. Her three-pointer at the 6:55 mark of the second period cut the deficit to 30-18. But the duo of Gray and Mompremier proved to be a handful over the opening 20 minutes. Gray had 15 points and Mompremier tossed in 14 more to send Miami into intermission up 42-22.
A late third quarter triple from Miami's Sarah Mortensen made it a 61-40 cushion heading to the fourth.
Back-to-back 3-pointers from Leah Church and Watts fueled a 16-2 UNC run to trim the deficit to 68-60. A three-pointer from Jocelyn Jones got Carolina within 75-68, but Miami converted 8-of-10 free throws in the final 72 seconds to salt the game away.
UNC leading scorer Janelle Bailey did not play the first half due to disciplinary reasons surrounding her actions on the court that resulted in a technical foul during Thursday's victory over Wake Forest. The 2018 ACC Freshman of the Year had nine points and five boards in 20 minutes of action.
Carolina visits Virginia Tech on Thursday at 7 p.m.
