Tar Heels Set For Bob Pollock Invitational
January 24, 2019 | Track & Field
CLEMSON, S.C. — The North Carolina track & field teams head back down to South Carolina for the Bob Pollock Invitational in Clemson, S.C. from Jan. 25-26. The competition schedule staggers both days with multis kicking off the invitational on Friday at 9:30 a.m. and track & field events following at 3 p.m. On Saturday, the multis take to the track at 9 a.m., field performers begin at 11:30 a.m. and track events are scheduled for 12 p.m.
"We're looking forward to going down to Clemson with a larger entourage this weekend," head coach Harlis Meaders said. "I think the team is off to an excellent start over the first two meets and we hope to add to our list of ACC qualifiers at one of the fastest tracks in the country. We've traditionally had some really good races down there and we've also done well in field events."
Following a successful showing at South Carolina's Gamecock Inaugural, the Tar Heels will travel even more student-athletes to Clemson's Rock Norman Track & Field Complex. The team will have a relatively even showing across the two days of action with twenty-three men and 19 women set to appear at least once in the invitational. Eight ACC qualifiers return to competition and a significant number of Carolina distance runners — six men and five women — will also make their season debuts in Clemson's facility .
"This will be a collection of almost all the disciplines — sprints, jumps, throws and distance events all competing together — so it will be the first time for us to really see our team as a collective on the road," Meaders said.
Twelve teams are expected to make appearances at the Bob Pollock Invitational, including Clemson, Alabama, Auburn, Florida A&M, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, UCF,
Virginia Tech, Vanderbilt and Wake Forest. Both Tar Heel squads will face some tough competition as the men take on three top-10 programs (#3 Florida State, #5 Georgia and #7 Alabama) and the women face three top-15 teams (#4 Georgia, #5 Florida State and #14 Alabama).

LAST TIME OUT
Daniel McArthur, a redshirt-sophomore thrower from Mooresville, N.C., made Carolina history on at South Carolina's Gamecock Inaugural in Columbia, S.C. McArthur crushed his career best in the shot put by nearly five feet and his mark of 64-10 1/2 (19.22m) is the best in the history of Carolina track & field. The original record holder, Vikas Gowda, set the school record back in 2005 before going on to becoming a four-time Olympian. McArthur currently ranks sixth in the nation.
Sophomore Anna Keefer, the 2018 ACC Champion in the women's long jump, qualified for her second ACC Indoor Championship event after running 7.44 in the 60-meter dash prelims just one week after qualifying for the conference championships in her title event. The St. Michael Albertville, Minn. native now ranks third all-time at UNC.
Also third in Carolina history, senior Anna Eaton inched her way closer to the No. 2 spot in UNC history with yet another personal-best height of 13-7 1/4 (4.15m) to win the women's pole vault invite title.
Two more Tar Heels, Liam Dixon and Dontavian Smith, joined the list of ACC Indoor qualifiers with their performances on the road. Junior pole vaulter Dixon, also from Mooresville, N.C., hit a lifetime-best height of 16-0 3/4 (4.90m) to finish third in the men's pole vault invite. and Smith, a sophomore from Roxboro, N.C., became the 12th Tar Heel qualifier with his 200-meter dash invite time of 21.61, a new personal record.
Overall, the North Carolina track & field teams wrapped up the weekend with an impressive list of results. The 17 Tar Heels who made the trip combined for three spots in the Carolina record books, eight ACC qualifying marks, seven career bests and 13 season bests.
