Honors College Golf Player of the Year
University of North Carolina sophomore men's golfer Ryan Burnett is one of 15 candidates on Golfweek's Fall Haskins Award Watch List.
The Haskins Award is presented annually to the men's college golfer of the year.
Burnett leads the seventh-ranked Tar Heels in stroke average at 68.83. The Lafayette, Calif., native has has finished first (Turning Stone Tiger Invitational in Verona, N.Y.), second (at Notre Dame), third (at Duke) and 17th (Olympia Fields Country Club/Fighting Illini Invitational) in four tournaments this season.
He's shot in the 60s in seven of 12 rounds this season, including all three rounds at Turning Stone (69-65-64), two rounds at Duke (69-66) and two rounds at Notre Dame (69-67). He won his first college event at Turning Stone when he shot 18-under-198. His score to par and total score were the second best in Carolina men's golf history.
Golfweek ranks Burnett seventh in the country.
He is one of six ACC players on the 15-man Haskins Watch List. He's also one of three sophomores on the list (with four juniors and eight seniors).
"Ryan has certainly had a tremendous start to the season," says head coach Andrew DiBitetto. "He's had success in different ways in all four of our tournaments. There have been times when he's hit the ball really well, other times he's putted well, some rounds he has done both well, and there have even been stretches when his hasn't done either but he's used his mind to achieve good results. Burney has been very efficient and purposeful with his practice and there's been a maturity to his game this year. He has confidence in himself and he is starting to understand that he doesn't need to be perfect in order to play well."
