Carolina Sweeps Boston College on Alumni Day
October 27, 2019 | Volleyball
CHAPEL HILL – Following head coach Joe Sagula's announcement of being inducted into the NC Volleyball Hall of Fame, North Carolina swept Boston College on Sunday afternoon on Alumni Day to uphold the Heels' undefeated ACC record in Carmichael Arena.
"It was a great team effort," Sagula said. "I was really impressed by how well all of our freshmen played today. Carly Peck on the rightside, Parker Austin, Lauren Harrison had great matches. Karenna Wurl in the back row. Skyy Howard blocking in the third set. To see the future of the program do that then have our alumni in the stands, it was kind of surreal. All the success sitting watching while seeing our whole team step up. Skylar Wine was fantastic playing rightside today. Our setters were great. Aristea Tontai served so well today. It was just a great team win and day."
For the second time in two weeks, the Tar Heels hit over .300 en route to their second ACC sweep. Austin led North Carolina's offense with 15 kills while Wine and Harrison picked up eight and nine, respectively. Peck hit seven kills without an error to attack at a .412 clip, as unc hit .343 as a team. Tontai paced UNC at the line, dishing out three aces. Carolina improves to .500 on the season for the first time since 2017 at 10-10 and 7-3 in ACC play. Jewel Strawberry led Boston College with 10 kills while the Eagles fall to 16-7, 7-3 in conference.
After a back-and-forth start in the first set, a kill by Harrison allowed the Tar Heels to pull away, giving a three-point lead and forcing Boston College to call a timeout. However, Carolina only extended its lead as the Eagles struggled to find momentum as they called a second timeout. Thanks to five kills by Harrison and four from Peck, the Heels won the first set, 25-17, after leading for nearly the entire set.
The Tar Heels came out swinging in the second set by earning the first point with a kill by Wine. As the set progressed, Boston College fought for each point as the set was tied five times with two lead changes. The Eagles tried to pull ahead with a kill by Clare Naughton followed by an ace from Madison McKnight, but the Heels dialed in and took the lead. A kill by Wine changed the momentum for UNC and sparked a 5-0 scoring run. Totaling eight kills in the set, Austin ended a long rally with back-to-back kills. The Heels maintained a steady lead with a kill by Peck to put Carolina up 17-11. Austin secured the 25-16 win with her fourth kill of the set as UNC hit .438 in the frame.
Attempting to change its momentum, Boston College came into the third set, scoring the first two points on a Strawberry kill and UNC error. After back-to-back kills from Austin, Howard and Wine teamed up for a block that gave the Heels the lead, which they retained for the remainder of the set. A series of Boston college errors and an ace by Tontai allowed the Heels to increase their lead to 9-4. Naughton's kill brought the Eagles within two, but Peck responded with one of her own to maintain the Heels momentum. Boston College went on a 3-0 scoring run to bring the set within four at the 19-15 mark, but another timely kill for Peck ended the streak. A kill by Tontai decided the final set, 25-20 and the three-set victory.
