Bailey Named To Wade Award Watch List
November 7, 2019 | Women's Basketball
North Carolina junior Janelle Bailey has been named to the Preseason "Wade Watch" List, announced Thursday by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). She is one of 30 players from across the nation to make the list and one of just four from the Atlantic Coast Conference.
The "Wade Watch" list of candidates for the Wade Trophy, which goes to the national player of the year, is composed of players selected by the WBCA NCAA Division I Coaches' All-America Selection Committee. The committee will review the list in January to determine if additional players will be added based on their play during the first half of the 2019-20 season.
Bailey and her Tar Heel teammates are set to open the UNC women's basketball regular season Thursday evening, hosting Western Carolina at Carmichael Arena for a 6 p.m. game. For ticket info, click here.
A 6-4 center from Charlotte, N.C., Bailey is also on the 2020 Lisa Leslie Award Watch List, announced last week. She was voted to the 2019-20 Preseason All-Atlantic Coast Conference team after earning second-team All-ACC honors last season.
As a sophomore in 2018-19, Bailey was the ACC's top-scoring front court player, averaging 16.7 points and 8.7 rebounds. She reached 1,000 career points in UNC's final game of the season.

The Wade Trophy — now in its 43nd year — is the oldest and most prestigious national player of the year award in college women's basketball. It is named in honor of the late, legendary Delta State University head coach Lily Margaret Wade, who won three consecutive national championships with the Lady Statesmen. First awarded in 1978 by the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD), now known as SHAPE America, the Wade Trophy has been presented to the WBCA NCAA Division I National Player of the Year since 2001.
This week, Bailey announced that she'll switch to jersey No. 30 this season to honor teammate Jaelynn Murray. Read more here.
