Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic Day Two

Hitt, UNC Finish 4th at Lamkin San Diego Classic

Four Tar Heels in the Top 20
Ryan Gerard shot a final round 69 and Austin Hitt tied for fourth to lead the University of North Carolina men's golf team to a fourth-place finish Tuesday at the Lamkin San Diego Classic.
Fifth-ranked Arizona State held on for a one-shot win over No. 8 Texas. St. Mary's (Calif.) posted the day's best round at 10 under and edged the Tar Heels by a stroke for third place at 4 under. UNC shot a 2 under 286 in the final round to finish 285-290-286 for a 3 under 861 total. Carolina was 11 strokes ahead of fifth-place San Diego State.
The 54-hole tournament was contested over days at the San Diego Country Club.
"Our guys fought like crazy today," says head coach Andrew DiBitetto. "We didn't have our best stuff and the day was going south around the turn, but our guys showed grit and scratched and clawed to make birdies. We made a run down the stretch, but weren't able to finish.
"We've seen the elite teams in the country in the last two tournaments and we've been within a handful of shots. The exciting part is that we have not played our best golf yet. We have areas where we can improve."
Hitt made four birdies in a row on the back side, including a 4 on the 485-yard, par-5 14th hole that put him a tie for first place. However, he doubled the 17th and finished three shots back of Blake Hathcoat (St. Mary's), Cole Hammer (Texas) and Mason Andersen (Arizona State). Hitt shot 69-73-71 to finish at 3 under 213. Andersen won medalist honors with a par in a one-hole playoff.
"We had four guys finish in the top 20 with Austin leading the way in fourth," says DiBitetto. "We have guys on this team that we believe can win tournaments, something that is incredibly difficult to do in our sport. Austin was in the mix this week and he can certainly learn a lot from the position he put himself in the last two days."
Gerard was 3 under on the back side today and finished tied for 10th at even par 216. Ryan Burnett tied for 18th at 2 over and Joshua Martin tied for 20th at 219.
The Tar Heels return to competition on March 23-24 when they host the Tar Heel Intercollegiate at UNC Finley Golf Course.
