CHAPEL HILL, NC — The North Carolina women's gymnastics team travels across the country this weekend to compete in a quad meet hosted by Oregon State for its last regular season competition on Friday night at 10 p.m. EST. The meet will also feature Iowa and Seattle Pacific and will take place at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis, Oregon.
"We head off to Oregon State to face a very strong Oregon State team and two other strong teams, Iowa and Seattle Pacific," said North Carolina Head Coach Derek Galvin. "We had one day of practice this past week and got to heal up a little bit… We've got our work cut out for us."
North Carolina comes into the meet ranked 46th with a national qualifying score of 194.615. The Tar Heels best events continue to be vault and floor, in which both they lead the East Atlantic Gymnastics League. Carolina is ranked in the top 25 nationally in both events as they are ranked 23rd (NQS 48.970) on vault and 25th (49.130) on floor.
Carolina junior Khazia Hislop continues to impress as she comes into the meet after winning her fifth-consecutive EAGL Specialist of the Week award this past week. She leads the EAGL on vault (NQS 9.880) and floor (NQS 9.920) and sits second on beam (NQS 9.840). She is the only gymnast to have a national qualifying score of 9.875 or higher on two events and the only gymnast to have a NQS of 9.900 or higher on any event.
LAST WEEK:
North Carolina scored a season high rotation score of 49.425 on floor with four career highs in the event but placed fourth (192.325) at the quad meet Sunday afternoon hosted by Kent State (192.500), featuring Ball State (195.325) and Rutgers (195.175). The Tar Heels record is now 7-8 overall and remains 3-3 in East Atlantic Gymnastics League play.
"The highlight of this meet was certainly the team performance on floor," said North Carolina Head Coach Derek Galvin. "Bars was a rough event and beam was a rough event but what the team did on floor was exceptional and what they did on vault was certainly courageous."
Carolina began the day on beam. With a team score of 47.700, its performance was highlighted by Khazia Hislop and Jamie DeCicco, who tied for second with scores of 9.825. Alexis Allen narrowly missed the top ten scorers, placing 11th with a 9.725.
For the second rotation, Carolina excelled on floor. The team scored 49.425, its highest of the season in any event and four Tar Heels matched or set career highs on floor. Hislop scored a career high matching 9.950 and took the top spot of the podium for the third consecutive week. Mikayla Robinson scored a career high 9.925 to place second. Madison Hargrave topped her career high with a 9.900 and tied for third. Jamie Antinori and Lily Dean scored 9.825, setting a career high for Antinori.
"Floor exercise was exceptional," commented Galvin. "It was our best team performance on that event for our first five competitors up. That was the best meet we have had this year. Jamie Antinori led us off and did the best floor routine I have seen her do in her college career. Lily Dean followed up with a great routine. Maddy Hargrave did a really solid routine, one of the best she has done. And the same for Mikayla [Robinson] and Khazia [Hislop]."
On vault, the Tar Heels scored 48.725. Hislop tied for first in the event with a score of 9.850. Robinson scored a 9.825, tying for third place. Hargrave rounded out the top ten Tar Heels with a 9.775. First-year Emery Summey made her first collegiate appearance on the apparatus and scored a 9.700.
Carolina ended the day on bars with a team score of 46.475. Two Tar Heels placed in the top ten of the event. Grace Donaghy scored a 9.775 to tie for fifth and Mekyllah Williams tied for 10th with a 9.675.
Oregon State remains one of the top teams in the country. Sitting 15th in the national rankings, they hold a national qualifying score of 196.485. The Beavers excel on all events, ranking nationally in the top 15 on three events and holding a national qualifying score of 49.00+ on all four events. Floor is their best event as they are ranked 11th in the nation with a NQS of 49.290.
Iowa comes into the meet with a national qualifying score of 195.420 and ranked 33rd nationally. The Hawkeyes best event is floor and they are ranked 17th in the nation with a NQS of 49.205. In addition to floor, Iowa thrives on uneven bars as well with a NQS of 48.945 and ranked 31st.
