Tar Heels Welcome Virginia For ACC Opener

TAR HEELS TO HOST CAVALIERS TO OPEN ACC PLAY IN 2019
• North Carolina will play its second consecutive top-10 opponent when it opens 2019 Atlantic Coast Conference play against Virginia on Saturday at noon. The game will be the second in the Tar Heels' new Lacrosse & Soccer Stadium.
• The ACC Network Extra will stream the game live.Â
• Saturday also is the Tar Heels' annual Breast Cancer Awareness game. UNC will honor breast cancer survivor Jaci Field, Director of UNC's Eddie Smith Field House.
• Carolina is coming off a domiinating, 21-11 win over No. 5 Northwestern last Saturday to open the new stadium.
• The Tar Heels are ranked No. 3 in the IWLCA and Inside Lacrosse D1 Media polls this week. The Cavaliers are No. 6 in the coaches poll and No. 5 in the media poll.
SERIES HISTORY VS. VIRGINIA
• North Carolina leads the all-time series with Virginia, 25-13, including a pair of wins in Chapel Hill in 2017 and a win in Charlottesville in 2018.Â
• Carolina has won 14 of the last 15 installments in the series, including five in a row.
• UNC leads the series, 14-4, in Chapel Hill and 14-7 in the regular season.
• Carolina head coach Jenny Levy played at Virginia from 1988-92, where she was a teammate of UVa head coach Julie Myers. Levy was a two-time first-team All-America attacker (then known as Jenny Slingluff). She was the Most Outstanding Attacker of the 1991 NCAA Tournament, leading the Cavs to their first-ever NCAA championship by scoring three goals in the title game.
LAST YEAR IN CHARLOTTESVILLE:
CAROLINA WIN AT SIXTH-RANKED VIRGINIA, 13-9
• Fifth-ranked North Carolina went on a 9-3 run in the second half and handed sixth-ranked Virginia its first loss of the season, 13-9, on March 10, 2018, at Klockner Stadium in Charlottesville.
• Marie McCool led UNC with three goals, six draw controls, five ground balls and two caused turnovers. Katie Hoeg had two goals and two assists and Maggie Bill had two goals and one assist. Ela Hazar added two goals, Kara Klages had a goal and an assist and Scottie Rose Growney, Charlotte Sofield and Marisa DiVietro all scored single goals.
• Redshirt freshman Taylor Moreno made her first career start in goal for Carolina and made a career-high 17 saves (since tied) in going the distance in the cage.
NEW STADIUM
• The University of North Carolina opened its new, on-campus UNC Lacrosse & Soccer Stadium on Saturday March 2. In the inaugural women's lacrosse game played there, the third-ranked women downed fifth-ranked Northwestern, 21-11.
• The new facility has been under construction since May 2017 (coaches' offices are still a work in progress). It is built on the site of the old Fetzer Field, which housed six sports on campus from 1935 through 2017. The current name of the new facility is the UNC Lacrosse & Soccer Stadium.
TAR HEELS DOMINATE NORTHWESTERN TO OPEN NEW STADIUM
• Jamie Ortega tied a North Carolina women's lacrosse record with 10 points as the third-ranked Tar Heels beat fifth-ranked Northwestern, 21-11, on Saturday afternoon in their first game at the new UNC Lacrosse & Soccer Stadium.
• Ortega tied her personal career highs with seven goals (set in 2018 vs. Duke in the ACC Tournament) and three assists (set vs. Louisville in 2018) to match the school record of 10 points set by Kellie Thompson vs. UMBC in 2002.
• Carolina also got a career-high five goals and six points from sophomore Taylor McDaniels and three goals and two assists from junior Olivia Ferrucci. Katie Hoeg added three goals and one assist despite being face-guarded for much of the first half. Gianna Bowe had two assists and Kara Klages had a goal and an assist.
ORTEGA NAMED ACC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK AFTER 10-POINT EXPLOSION (MARCH 4)
• North Carolina sophomore attacker Jamie Ortega was named Atlantic Coast Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week on March 5.Â
• Ortega tied a UNC program record with 10 points in the Tar Heels' 21-11 win over fifth-ranked Northwestern on Saturday to open the school's new Lacrosse & Soccer Stadium. She tied her personal career highs with seven goals (on just eight shot attempts) and three assists, and her 10 points tied the school record set by Kellie Thompson in 2002.
