Tar Heels Upset No. 3 Florida State to Win Fifth ACC Series

CHAPEL HILL – Thanks to a walk-off hit by Berlynne Delamora in game one and a shutout by Hannah George in the series finale, North Carolina defeated Florida State in the doubleheader for the ACC series win on Monday night at Anderson Stadium.

Winning the series for the first time since 2011, the Tar Heels outlasted FSU in game one of the doubleheader for the 6-5 win in nine innings. George tossed a gem for a 1-0 shutout in game two for the series and Carolina's sixth ranked win of the season.

The victories mark Carolina's first top-five wins in program history and the Tar Heels' fifth and sixth ranked wins of the season. Prior to tonight's doubleheader sweep, Florida State won the past 16 games dating back to 2013.

The Tar Heels and Seminoles fought through a 21-hit, nine-inning battle in game one. The two worked through three lead changes and five tie scores before the Carolina came out on top thanks to Berlynne Delamora's bases-loaded RBI-single in the bottom of the ninth for the 6-5 walk-off win.

Carolina's momentum continued in game two of the doubleheader as freshman pitcher George was the winner of the pitcher's duel with Megan King for the 1-0 win. George and Carolina's steady defense did not allow a runner past second after the first inning. Kiani Ramsey capitalized on an FSU miscue to score the game-winning run in the fifth.

The Tar Heels went 7-1 in their eight-game homestand before traveling to Campbell Wednesday and Virginia Tech Friday and Saturday. Carolina improves to 26-14, 13-5 in the ACC while Florida State falls to 38-7, 10-5 in conference.

Game One: W, 6-5 in nine innings
» Florida State's Sydney Sherrill sent a solo-shot to left to put the Noles on the board.
» Kiani Ramsey dropped a two-out single in left for UNC's first hit of the day. Brittany Pickett took the pitch before Megan Dray sent an RBI-single over the shortstop to knot the game at 1-1.
» Florida State reclaimed the lead on pair of UNC miscues that allowed Carsyn Gordon to score in the third.
» Ramsey tied the game up at 2-2 with an RBI-double to left, scoring Kristina Burkhardt. Ramsey took advantage of a Seminoles' error for the 3-2 lead.
» FSU did the same and evened it up at 3-3 on a UNC miscue in the fourth.
» Abby Settlemyre led off the fourth with a single to right. A sac-bunt advanced her to third before stealing third. Zoë Goodman pinch hit a double to left, putting the Tar Heels ahead 4-3.
»  After two scoreless innings, the Seminoles tied the game up for the third time on a trio of hits in the seventh.
» Sherrill slugged her second homer of the day in the ninth for the one-run edge.
» The Tar Heels persevered to walk-off for the win over No. 3 Florida State. Pickett singled through the left side after a Burkhardt single and Ramsey walk. Dray was intentionally walked to load the bases before Delamora slugged the ball to the left field warning track, allowing the game-winning run to score.

» After four scoreless frames, DeBerry led off the fifth a single. Murray reached on fielder's choice, but an error keeps both on the bags. Ramsey mirrored Murray and was able to score DeBerry for the RBI and 1-0 lead. Zoë Goodman
» George allowed three walks in the first inning, but did not allow a runner past first for the remainder of the game. The freshman retired 12-straight from the third through sixth innings.
» Carolina's defense bounced back for a clean game two after three errors in the first game. Â
