• North Carolina advanced to the ACC Tournament semifinals Saturday against ACC regular-season champion Virginia by rallying to beat seventh-ranked Syracuse 11-10 in the first round game on Thursday night. The Orange had broken open a close game in which neither team had led by more than two goals by tallying three goals at 11:43, 8:31 and 6:12 of the fourth period to go up 10-7. After going up by three goals, SU had three possessions and in each case UNC forced a turnover (by Michael Nathan, Brian Cameron, Nicky Solomon, respectively).
• After the third caused turnover, UNC tallied three goals in a matter of 45 seconds without Syracuse touching the ball. Midfielder Matt Gavin scored at 3:45, attackman Brian Cameron scored off an assist by Nicky Solomon at 3:07 and freshman Zachary Tucci won his own face-off and scored six seconds later to tie the game. Gavin scored his second goal of the fourth quarter to provide the winning margin with 1:07 left in the game.
• UNC improved to 9-18 all-time against Syracuse. Thursday's game marked the first time in those nine wins that the Tar Heels had trailed the Orange in the fourth quarter of the game and come back to win.
• Carolina won 14 of 24 face-offs Thursday against the Orange, the first time since the win over Duke on March 30 that Carolina had been above 50 percent at the X. Syracuse had won 15 of 24 draws in the regular-season meeting. Face-offs will again be key Saturday. Virginia won 17 of 23 draws against the Tar Heels on April 6 in Charlottesville.
• UNC improved to 22-19 all-time in ACC Tournament games with Thursday's victory over the Orange. The Tar Heels are now 2-2 all-time in ACC Tournament games against Syracuse. UNC and Virginia have played each other in ACC Tournament games 12 times in history with the Tar Heels going 7-5 in those matches.
• Carolina has won the last two meetings between UNC and Virginia in ACC Tournament play. Carolina beat the Cavaliers 11-9 in the semifinals in 2012 in Charlottesville and 16-13 in the championship game in 2013 in Chapel Hill.
• Carolina's ACC Tournament championships have come in 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1996, 2013 and 2017. UNC has 13 ACC championships overall as it won crowns in 1981, 1982, 1985 and 1988 when the titles were decided by regular season play. The first ACC Tournament was held in 1989.
