Tar Heels Earn Three More All-ACC Accolades
May 10, 2019 | Track & Field
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - North Carolina's Daniel McArthur, Liam Dixon and Drew Pedersen earned second-team All-ACC finishes on the second day of the ACC Championships at Virginia's Lannigan Field on Friday.
McArthur, a junior from Mooresville, N.C., finished fourth in the men's shot put with a mark of 59-10 1/2 (18.25 meters). McArthur is now a five-time All-ACC competitor in the men's shot put between indoor and outdoor competition. Dixon, also a junior from Mooresville, N.C., and Pedersen, a senior from Apex, N.C., both cleared 15-7 Âľ (4.77 meters) to finish in a three-way tie for sixth place in the men's pole vault competition.
"Both Drew and Liam did a great job today," head coach Harlis Meaders said. "Those guys competed well indoors and I was really excited to see Drew to come out and earn All-ACC in his final season of eligibility. Fortunately, we'll have Liam back next year and he'll continue to improve. I know Daniel is a little disappointed about finishing fourth. He had such a fantastic indoor season and unfortunately, we've been a little banged up this outdoor season. Hopefully we can get healthier and get ready to make a charge at the NCAA prelims in hopes of getting to Texas."
The North Carolina women extended their team score to 25 points with sophomore Emerson Porter's (Charlotte, N.C.) seventh-place finish in the women's pole vault while the three All-ACC performances on Friday gave the Tar Heel men nine points.
Heading into the last day of competition, the Tar Heels have advanced seven student-athletes to event finals. On Friday, sophomores Isaiah Palmer (Plano, Texas) and Ryan Saint-Germain (Jacksonville, Fla.) advanced to the men's 400-meter final, sophomore Anna Keefer (St. Michael Albertville, Minn.) earned a championship-final appearance in the women's 100 and freshman Maiah Walker (Lake Wales, Fla.) advanced to the women's 400-meter final. On Thursday, junior Cameron Douglas (Loganville, Ga.) advanced to the men's 200-meter final while two juniors — Alex Milligan (State College, Pa.) and Brandon Tubby (Hillsborough, N.J.) — qualified for the 1,500-meter final.
"I'm really excited to see our student-athletes advance," Meaders said. "I think it's an excellent opportunity to contribute some more points to our team score tomorrow. Across the board, our kids performed really well. When you look at the final results, you'll see that most of them have either lifetime bests, collegiate bests or season bests. It's great to see them handling the pressure so well and competing at the level they're capable of performing. Maiah Walker qualifying for the women's 400 as a true freshman is an outstanding accomplishment. Emerson Porter in the women's pole vault has continued to excel and had a lifetime best here at the conference championships which is a sign of good things to come from her. I was really happy to see some of our seniors do well, too. Blake Dodge was not with us in the fall, but she came back in the spring and she's starting to run well late in the season."
In addition to the seven advancing finalists, Carolina continues competition on Saturday with athletes in four field events, both 5,000-meter races and three relays. Due to the threat of heavy rain on Saturday, the final and deciding session of the Championships will begin three and a half hours earlier than originally scheduled.
Competition is now scheduled to open at 10 a.m. with the men's discus followed by the men's and women's triple jump at 11 a.m., women's high jump at 11:30 a.m. and women's discus at 12:30 p.m. Relays will bookend the running events at 12:05 p.m. and 2:50 p.m. with finals for the 1,500 meters, 110-meter hurdles, 400 meters, 100 meters, 800 meters, 400-meter hurdles, 200 meters and 5,000 meters in between.
