Carolina Starts NCAA Competition On Thursday

JACKSONVILLE, FLA. — The University of North Carolina track & field teams will compete in the NCAA East Preliminary Round on the campus of the University of North Florida at Hodges Stadium beginning Thursday May 23 through Saturday May 25. The 14 individuals and men's 4x400 relay qualified from the Carolina teams will compete looking to advance to the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Austin, Texas.
The top-12 finishers from each event's field of 48 will move on to the NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas, June 5-8.
The meet begins Thursday at 12 p.m. with freshman Emily Malone and redshirt freshman Madison Wiltrout in the women's javelin. Wiltrout will be the first of Carolina's three individual ACC champions from the 2019 ACC Outdoor Championships to compete on Thursday with Nicole Greene and Jill Shippee taking the field later in the day. A three-time All-American high jumper, redshirt junior Nicole Greene will look to advance to her first ever NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at 3:30 p.m. in the women's high jump. Sophomore Jill Shippee, the new ACC record holder, and graduate student Alex Cooke will compete in the women's hammer throw (4:00 p.m.) with sophomore Anna Keefer in the women's long jump (6:45 p.m.).
On the track, juniors Alex Milligan and Brandon Tubby will get Carolina started in the men's 1,500 meters (6:00 p.m.) with Keefer competing in her second of three events, this time in the women's 100-meter dash (6:30 p.m.). Carolina will be represented by two Tar Heels in the first rounds of 400-meter competitions — freshman Maiah Walker will compete in the women's 400 (7:20 p.m.) and sophomore Isaiah Palmer will close out day one of competition in the men's 400 (7:45 p.m.).
Contingent on advancing from the first round, Tar Heels competing in quarterfinal action on the track Friday will look to punch their tickets to Austin in the 400 meters and women's 100 meters. Anna Keefer will also make her third event appearance in the first round of the women's 200 meters (7:30 p.m.).
Redshirt junior Jared Martin kicks off Friday's field competition for the Heels in the men's javelin (12 p.m.) followed by junior Daniel McArthur in the men's discus (4 p.m.), his first of two event appearances. Senior Anna Eaton and sophomore Emerson Porter will represent the women's program in the pole vault (5 p.m.). The 2019 ACC indoor champion in the men's shot put, McArthur will also compete in the first round of NCAA shot put competition on Saturday afternoon (2:45 p.m.).
Carolina's men's 4x400 relay and the Tar Heels who advanced from the men's 1,500 meters and the women's 200 meters will have one more chance to qualify to the national stage on Saturday with the quarterfinals for the men's 1,500 meters (6:45 p.m.), the women's 200 meters (7:30 p.m.) and the men's 4x400 (9:45 p.m.) on the track.

Nicole Greene - High Jump
Greene, a redshirt-junior from Ponte Vedra, Fla., has qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary Round for the third time in her career. She is seeded first in the region after jumping an outdoor personal-best mark of 6-2 (1.88 meters) to win the ACC title at the 2019 ACC Outdoor Championships. Greene's mark is also good for second best in the NCAA in 2019.

Jill Shippee - Hammer Throw
Shippee, a sophomore forom Clifton Park, N.Y., has qualified for her second NCAA East Preliminary Round. She is seeded first in the region after a record-setting performance at the ACC Championships. Her mark of 224-3 (68.36 meters) set an ACC league and ACC meet record and marked Shippee's fifth time setting the UNC school record in the women's hammer throw. Shippee ranks fourth in the NCAA.

Madison Wiltrout - Javelin Throw
Wiltrout, a redshirt-freshman from Connellsville, Pa., will be making her first trip to the NCAA Prelims. Her mark of 182-5 (55.60 meters) at the ACC Championships won her the event title and broke her own school record. Wiltrout ranks third in the East Region and eighth in the nation in 2019.

Eaton, a senior from Cary, N.C., is making her second appearance at the NCAA East Prelims. Her season-best mark of 13-6½ (4.13), set at the Virginia Grand Prix on April 27, ranks her at 20th in the East Region.

Anna Keefer – Long Jump, 100m, 200m
Keefer, a sophomore from St. Michael Albertville, Minn., will return to the NCAA East Preliminary Round after a successful appearance in the long jump in 2018. Keefer, who finished second-team All-America at the 2018 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, will be making her second appearance in the long jump and also her first appearances on the track in the 100 and 200 meters. Keefer's marks of 20-3 ½ (6.18 meters), 11.43 seconds and 23.54 seconds respectively rank her 33rd, 28th and 35th in the East Region.

Walker, a freshman from Lake Wales, Fla., will be competing at the NCAA East Prelims after finishing sixth for All-ACC honors at her first-ever ACC Outdoor Championships. Her season-best time of 53.62 seconds, which she ran in the prelims at the 2019 ACC Outdoor Championships, places her at 36th in the East Region.

McArthur, a junior from Mooresville, N.C., will be making his third appearance in the men's shot put and his second in the discus at the NCAA East Prelims. McArthur is seeded 11th in the East with his shot put mark of 62-8 (19.10 meters) and 35th in the discus with his mark of 176-11 (53.92 meters). McArthur finished fourth in the men's shot put at the 2019 NCAA Indoor Championships, the best finish by a men's shot putter in the history of UNC track & field.

Isaiah Palmer – 400m

The six-time All-ACC competitor is seeded 13th in the 400 heading into the NCAA East Prelims.

His performance is seeded 15th in the East Region.

Carolina is sending a men's 4x400 team to the NCAA East Preliminary Round for the tenth-straight season. The Tar Heels captured the ACC title in the event for the second-consecutive year and for the sixth time in the last seven seasons. Carolina's best men's 4x400 time of the season (3:07.43) is seeded 14th in the East Region.
