UNC Marches On To NCAA Second Round Match Saturday Vs. Georgia

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The 10th-ranked North Carolina men's tennis team advanced in NCAA Tournament play Friday with a shutout win over Navy at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. Playing on their home courts on a sunny, late afternoon, the Tar Heels didn't drop a set on the way to a 4-0 win over the Midshipmen.

The first-round win moves the Tar Heels ()19-6) on to a second-round matchup on Saturday with No. 18 Georgia, which beat Elon 4-0 in the earlier first-round game in Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels and Bulldogs will face off at 4 p.m., following two first-round matchups in the NCAA women's bracket. Oklahoma and Winthrop play at 10 a.m. and the Tar Heel women, seeded second in the NCAA field, face South Carolina State at 1 p.m.
Friday against Navy, Carolina claimed the doubles point with wins on Courts 1 and 3. Court 3 was the first to finish, with Mac Kiger and Simon Soendergaard cruising to a 6-1 victory. The top Tar Heel team of William Blumberg and Blaine Boyden, now ranked No. 13 nationally, won 6-3 to clinch the point.

In singles, freshman Brian Cernoch finished first, serving out a 6-2, 6-2 win over Jack McBride on Court 4 to make it 2-0 Tar Heels. Boyden wrapped up on Court 5 about seven minutes later, when his opponent sent a return into the net to give the Tar Heel senior a 6-1, 6-3 win.
Playing on Court 6, Soendergaard came close to closing out his match to give UNC a sweep on the lower bank of courts, but it was junior Josh Peck on Court 3 who managed to finish first, beating Greg Durham 6-1, 6-3 to give Carolina the clinching point.
