Men's 4x400 Earns Second-Team All-America Honors
June 5, 2019 | Track & Field
AUSTIN, Texas — North Carolina's men's 4x400 relay earned second-team All-America honors at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the University of Texas's Mike A. Myers Stadium on Wednesday. Sophomore Isaiah Palmer, junior Ari Cogdell, sophomore Jadon Johnson and sophomore Ryan Saint-Germain teamed up to finish fourth in their heat and 10th overall with a season-best time of 3:05.11.
The men's 10th-place finish marks their first second-team All-America accolade since 2012 and the highest placement by a Tar Heel men's 4x400 team since 1997 when Jackson Miranda, Slade Trabucco, Milton Campbell and Dominic Demeritte finished eighth overall.
"It was an amazing job by that quartet," head coach Harlis Meaders said. "To come to the NCAA finals and have your fastest time of the year on the biggest stage is truly amazing. I couldn't be more proud of those guys. Coach Abigi [Id-Deen] and coach Kia [Id-Deen] have done an amazing job of keeping those kids healthy and keeping them ready. Even though we didn't make the true finals, to finish with the tenth-fastest prelim time out of the 24 teams here — you have to be proud of that group. I think they did an absolutely amazing job."
The Tar Heels' men's 4x400 finished their season not only with All-America honors, but also with an ACC Championship title under their belt. North Carolina won the ACC event for the second-consecutive year and for the sixth time in the last seven seasons in May. Seeded 14th heading into the NCAA East Preliminary Round, Carolina advanced from the east regional in Jacksonville, Fla. with the seventh-best overall time of 3:05.44.
"A little disappointed that we didn't advance to the final, but right now most of us are just excited that we PRed," sophomore Ryan Saint-Germain said. "This is a season best — and for some personal bests — and all of us are returning with three of the four being sophomores. So we'll be here not just next year, but also the year after that. This was a great start, a great experience and a great run by all of us. I'm still surprised at how well I ran, but it feels so good knowing that me and these guys that I'm close with are all on the same page. We all have the same goal and we want to come back next year and get closer and closer to first-team All-America each year."
All members of the relay — including the two alternates — will be back in Carolina uniforms next year.
Tar Heel fans can still stay tuned for more Carolina action with Madison Wiltrout in the women's javelin on Thursday (9:15 p.m. ET) and Nicole Greene in the women's high jump on Saturday (6 p.m. ET).
