Carolina Showcases Newcomers at Blue & White Scrimmage
August 17, 2019 | Volleyball
CHAPEL HILL – With six newcomers donning Carolina Blue for the first time, fans were able to get an early look at the 2019 Tar Heels in the annual Blue and White scrimmage on Saturday afternoon following Kelsie Houston's signing day. Blue won the first two sets while White took the second two, ending the scrimmage in a 2-2 tie.
"It's always good to put the jerseys on and get everyone excited about volleyball," head coach Joe Sagula said. "I'm really happy to see a lot of friends, families and fans come out and support the team today. It's really encouraging it. As far as our performance, I was really encouraged by our serving overall. It's a significant step for our program. Conversely, our passing needs to get better. We touched more balls on the block than what we have. There's still some things on the offensive rhythm that we need to work on. Our defense with tips and short balls needs to improve. We needed this scrimmage to see where we need to improve – that's the most important thing. It'll be a lot more fun next weekend with a full team against a full opponent."
Redshirt-freshman Lauren Harrison recorded a match-best 18 kills in her Carolina debut. Freshman Parker Austin posted 13 while returners Destiny Cox and Skylar Wine also had double-digit kills. Collectively, Blue had 16 blocks while White tallied 13 led by Aristea Tontai's nine. Karenna Wurl tallied 13 digs – the best among newcomers – while returners Cox, Wine and Mia Fradenburg recorded double-digit numbers. Setters Hunter Atherton and Annabelle Archer traded teams, pacing the Blue and White to a draw.
Blue started strong winning the first two sets, 25-21 and 25-20, respectively. Harrison led Blue with five kills in the first set and six in the second. Howard tacked on four for Blue to begin the match while both Fradenburg collected five digs. Both Ryan Shannon and Wurl had five digs apiece for White in the first frame. Austin slugged an errorless four kills in the first two sets for White.
White bounced back to even up the match with 26-24 and 25-22 set victories. White tallied five total blocks in the third set including a solo block by Raleigh Clark to clinch the 26-24 win. Getting into a groove, Cox led white with six kills in the frame. Skyy Howard contributed to three blocks for Blue in the set while Austin led the team with five in the fourth.
Up next, UNC hosts Coastal Carolina for a preseason scrimmage on August 24 at 5 p.m. at Carmichael Arena. The Tar Heels begin the regular season Aug. 30-31 with the ACC/Big Ten Challenge in Chapel Hill.
