Tar Heels Take Second to No. 11 Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The North Carolina women's gymnastics team finished second (194.625) in their first quad meet of the season hosted by the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Ky. on Friday night. The Tar Heels totaled 194.625, falling to No. 11 Kentucky (196.375), but besting NC State (194.425) and Lindenwood (193.300).
Strong performances across all events by the Tar Heels resulted in three podium finishes by three different gymnasts as well as a number of top-five scores. Senior Alexis Allen scored a career-high 9.875 on vault to tie for first place with gymnasts from NC State and Kentucky. Fellow senior Khazia Hislop was close behind, scoring a 9.850 in the same event.
Freshman Elizabeth Culton and Hislop also earned top-three finishes on beam with a team-leading 9.900 for second and a 9.875 for third, respectively. The Durham, N.C. native also finished fourth in the all-around competition with a score of 39.075.
The Tar Heels opened the night on the floor and scored 48.950 as a team. The seniors stood out with the strongest performances – Hislop earned a score of 9.875 and Mikayla Robinson 9.850. Culton also had a notable performance, scoring a 9.775.
For the second rotation, Carolina totaled another 48.950 on vault. Allen's score of 9.875 earned her a spot in a three-way tie for first place and helped the Tar Heels stay steady in a close race with their opponents. Hislop also put up a competitive score of 9.850 that earned her a fourth-place finish for UNC. Not far behind was sophomore Drew Aldridge, scoring a 9.775.
Aldridge continued to shine in the Tar Heels' third rotation, in which the team put up 47.750 on bars and Aldridge 9.750. Her score was close behind teammate Culton who scored 9.800.
The Tar Heels closed out the meet with their highest rotation score, combining for 48.975 on beam. Culton's 9.900 led North Carolina in the event while Hislop followed just behind in a tie for third (9.875). Freshman Hannah Nam also had one of the Tar Heels' best performances, scoring 9.800 in her second collegiate event.
Carolina will return home to host Pittsburgh next Saturday, January 25 for their first EAGL meet of the season. Competition is expected to begin at 3:45 p.m. in Carmichael Arena.
