Seven NCAA Champions Earn All-ACC Academic Honors
January 29, 2020 | Field Hockey, Academics
Seven members of the UNC field hockey squad that won national and conference titles in 2019 have been named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Team, announced Wednesday by the league. Tar Heels Marissa Creatore, Feline Guenther, Catherine Hayden, Yentl Leemans, Erin Matson, Madison Orobono and Courtnie Williamson were among 42 conference student-athletes selected for the honor.
All seven were starters on the 2019 team, which went undefeated at 23-0, winning NCAA and ACC Championships.
The award recognizes academic and athletic achievement for the past season. Creatore and Guenther were honored for the third time in their UNC careers, Hayden and Matson for the second time, and Leemans, Orobono and Williamson for the first.
Creatore, a psychology major from Chapel Hill, graduated from UNC in December. A starter at forward in every game her senior year, she earned third-team All-America honors and was the ACC Championship MVP.
Guenther is a senior majoring in business administration and is from Hamburg, Germany. A starting midfielder throughout the season, she was named to the All-South Region second team and earned Dean's List honors.
Hayden, a journalism major from Greenwich, Conn., started at forward in every game. A December graduate, she earned All-South Region and All-ACC second team honors as a senior.
Leemans, a psychology major from Breda, Netherlands, was the 2019 ACC Defensive Player of the Year as a senior in 2019. She earned first-team All-America and All-ACC honors as a second-year starter in the midfield.
Matson, a sophomore advertising and public relations major from Chadds Ford, Pa., was the 2019 Honda Award winner and the NFHCA National Player of the Year. She led the nation in scoring and earned first-team All-America and ACC Offensive Player of the Year honors for the second year in a row.
Orobono, a freshman journalism major from Macungie, Pa., and Williamson, a junior business administration major from Radnor, Pa., started in the backfield for the Tar Heels all season. The team allowed just 24 goals in 23 games and had seven shutouts.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one's academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
Virginia's Rachel Robinson was named the ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year. To see the full All-ACC Academic Team, click here.
The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
