WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.—Kyle Holcomb scored in overtime to lift No. 1 Wake Forest to a 1-0 win over No. 3 North Carolina in men's soccer action at Spry Stadium on Sunday night.
On the winning play, Omar Hernandez sent a long cross into the box from 25 yards away on the left side. Holcomb beat UNC goalkeeper Alec Smir to the ball by a split second and put it in the net for the Demon Deacon victory.
It was the first goal allowed by Carolina (2-1, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) all season. Coming off a loss at Clemson on Tuesday night, Wake Forest improved to 4-1, 2-1.
Santiago Herrera had Carolina's best scoring opportunity during regulation with a strong shot from the center of the box that Wake goalkeeper Andrew Pannenberg saved in the 90th minute.
WFU out-shot UNC, 8-6, on the night, including a 4-1 edge in shots on goal. Each team took four corner kicks. Smir finished with three saves in the game with another strong effort in goal for Carolina.
Much of the game was played in the midfield, with Carolina not taking its first corner kick until there were 31 minutes remaining in the game.
The Demon Deacons had more scoring opportunities in the first half than Carolina, with Smir playing well to thwart several of those tries. Wake out-shot UNC, 5-2, in a physical opening 45 minutes with two of those shots being on-goal and saved by Smir.
