Educate and Advocate: Food Insecurity
November 24, 2020 | Women's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Throughout the 2020-21 campaign, the UNC women's basketball team will highlight various causes, dedicating the season to advocating for and bringing awareness to issues that are near and dear to the Tar Heel student-athletes and coaching staff.
The team opens the season on Wednesday with a 1 p.m. matchup against Radford. UNC has dedicated that game to bringing awareness to food insecurity, defined as the lack of a consistent source of food to live a healthy life.
Some facts about food insecurity:
• In North Carolina, 1,456,200 people struggle with hunger, and 1 in 5 of those struggling are children. (feedingamerica.org)
• In Orange County, 20 percent of children and 15 percent of adults are food insecure. (Porch)
• During the COVID pandemic, the number of food insecure people in the U.S. has skyrocketed to 265 million, up from 135 million people in 2019. (npr.org)
In the days leading up to the Radford game, the Tar Heel team packed snack bags for a local organization called TABLE that provides hunger relief and nutrition education services to children living in Orange County.
Some ways you can help:
• Donate food items.
• Donate funds.
• Use your voice to advocate for others and help influence positive change.
