Bailey Named ACC WBB Player of the Week
December 21, 2020 | Women's Basketball
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Tar Heel senior Janelle Bailey has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday. Bailey, a center from Charlotte, is coming off a week in which she averaged 19.3 points and 11 rebounds over three games for UNC.
Carolina (7-2, 2-2 ACC) went 2-1 last week, including a big win in the first meeting of the season against a ranked team. After falling 67-63 on Monday, the Tar Heels bounced back with a 92-68 win over No. 18 Syracuse at home on Thursday. On Sunday, they beat Wake Forest 77-74 in overtime, avenging a defeat 10 days ago in Winston-Salem.
Bailey scored a season-high 25 points and grabbed eight rebounds in a highly-efficient 24 minutes of play against the Orange. She was also 5-for-5 from the foul line and had two assists and two steals. She bookended that performance with a pair of double-doubles: at Miami on Monday, she finished with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Against Wake Forest on her home court at Carmichael Arena on Sunday, Bailey had 19 points and 12 rebounds in the win.
This marks the third time in her career that Bailey has been named ACC Player of the Week. After earning Freshman of the Week honors seven times in her first season as a Tar Heel, she earned the Player of the Week recognition once as a sophomore and then shared the honor once as a junior.
Clemson's Gabby Elliott was named ACC Freshman of the Week. Click here for the complete ACC release.
Following Sunday's win, the Tar Heels have an 11-day break before their next game, on Dec. 31 at Syracuse.
