Bailey Earns ACC Honor Following Big Week
February 3, 2020 | Women's Basketball
Dominant performances in two Tar Heel wins last week have led to Atlantic Coast Conference honors for North Carolina junior Janelle Bailey. The UNC center has been named Co-ACC Women's Basketball Player of the Week, as announced Monday by the league.
Bailey, a communication studies major from Charlotte, averaged 23 points and 13 rebounds last week as UNC earned homecourt wins against Virginia (78-68) and Clemson (86-72) to improve to 16-6 overall and 7-4 in ACC play.
"Janelle was a dominant and consistent force in our sweep last week," UNC coach Courtney Banghart said. "She was incredibly efficient from the floor and rebounded in crowds and outside of her area the whole weekend. Watching Janelle mature as a player and find so many ways to help this team win has been such a joy. We're so glad she's a Tar Heel."
Against Virginia on Thursday, Bailey had 23 points and a season-high 17 rebounds for her 11th double-double of the season. She was 10-15 from the field and also equaled her season high with three blocks in 38 minutes on the court.
Against Clemson on Sunday, as UNC won back-to-back conference games for the first time since the start of ACC play, Bailey again scored 23 points and also added a team-high nine rebounds in 30 minutes on the court.
The wins were her first back-to-back 20-point performances in ACC play this season and the second time she's accomplished that in her career.
She's now averaging a double-double with 15.6 points and 10.0 rebounds.
This is the second Player of the Week honor for Bailey, who also was recognized once during her sophomore year. As a freshman, she was a seven-time ACC Rookie of the Week.
Boston College's Emma Guy shares the Player of the Week honor and Pitt's Dayshanette Harris was named ACC Rookie of the Week.
Next up for the Tar Heels is a road game at Duke on Thursday. The Tar Heels host Virginia Tech on Sunday at 2 p.m.
