Tar Heels Welcome Transfer To Program
April 23, 2020 | Women's Basketball
Petra Holešínská will join the UNC women's basketball program for the 2020-21 season as a graduate transfer, adding depth and experience to the Tar Heel roster. A 5-10 guard from the Czech Republic, Holešínská has spent the past four years at the University of Illinois and will graduate in May with a degree in marketing.
Â
She sat out the 2018-19 season after a knee injury so has one year of eligibility remaining.
Â
Holešínská led Illinois in scoring last season, averaging 12.6 points per game and earning honorable mention All-Big Ten recognition. She was the Fighting Illini's top three-point shooter, leading the team in percentage and threes made. She also has earned All-Big Ten Academic honors.
Â
"It's with great enthusiasm that we add Petra to our program," UNC coach Courtney Banghart said. "She brings experience, shot-making ability, defensive toughness, and a love for the game that will help us immediately. When you bring someone in, especially for only a year, they have to check off so many boxes. They have to be in a position to immediately help on and off the court, and they have to fit the culture already in place. Petra is a home run. As Illinois's leading scorer last year, she showed consistency and resolve, and she was adored by her teammates and coaches. We all look forward to her arrival to Blue Heaven."
Â
Because of the impact Covid-19 has had on recruiting, Holešínská was not able to visit UNC before making her decision. But she did play in Carmichael in December, when the Fighting Illini came to Carmichael Arena for the Big Ten-ACC Challenge.
Â
"I chose UNC because of the family atmosphere and the opportunity to do something special here," Holešínská said. "I will get to compete for an extremely successful basketball program while getting a degree from one of the top universities in the country. Although I wasn't able to visit the campus, I created a great connection with Coach Banghart and the whole coaching staff during my recruiting process and I just knew this was the right place for me. I'm really excited and thankful I get to be a Tar Heel."
Â
In addition to excelling on the collegiate level, Holešínská has played for the Czech Republic National Team. A native of Vracov, Czech Republic, she is the daughter of Petr and Marketa Holešínská and has a sister, Michaela.Â
