On This Date May 14: Heels Top Duke In 2005 Regionals
May 14, 2020 | Women's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (2005)
Looking back 15 years ago in what was head coach Brian Kalbas' second year in charge of the program, it was 2005 when Carolina turned the corner in becoming a perennial visitor to the late rounds of the NCAA Team Championship.
A giant hurdle to overcome was always Duke and this season was no different. The Tobacco Road rivals were pitted against each other in a second round NCAA Regional on a Saturday afternoon in mid May from Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
Though it wasn't a vintage Blue Devil squad, Kalbas' crew blanked its Durham foes, 4-0, to advance to the NCAA round of 16 for the third time in four years. Meanwhile, the loss halted an impressive streak of 14 straight years that Duke had made the round of 16.
"The players deserve this opportunity," said Kalbas after the win. "This is such a wonderful group of girls, and for many of them, it will be their first trip to the NCAA round of 16. It's a special treat to know that we are one of the top 16 teams in the country and that we've proven it on the court."
UNC's Caitlin Collins and Tanja Markovic clinched the doubles point at the No. 3 spot and moved the Tar Heels to 1-0 in the match after taking an 8-6 win over the Blue Devils' Parker Goyer and Jennifer Zika.
Aniela Mojzis, ranked 41st in singles, quickly moved the match score to 2-0 after cruising past No. 97 Jackie Carleton 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1.
Sophomore Jenna Long then won 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 3 spot, defeating Duke's Clelia Deltour. Long's win improved her overall record to 36-8 on the season. Her win total remains the third most in program history for a sophomore.
Junior Tanja Markovic clinched the match shortly after Long's victory by defeating Zika 6-2, 6-0 at No. 6.
Five days later, 13th seed UNC posted a 4-0 upset of fourth seed Vanderbilt in Athens, Georgia. The win saw Carolina advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championship for just the second time in program history.
The Tar Heels fell short in their bid for the program's first trip to the final four with a 4-1 setback at the hands of ACC rival Clemson. The match was marred by rain delays that totaled over three and a half hours, however, the 12th seeded Tigers prevailed in a match that took just over seven hours to complete.
