Field Hockey Announces Team Captains

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Graduate student Courtnie Williamson has been named the UNC field hockey team captain for the 2020 season, with senior Amanda Hendry and junior Erin Matson serving as vice captains. Coach Karen Shelton announced the honors on Friday before her team held a blue-white scrimmage, working toward the season opener on Sept. 20 at Wake Forest.
"I was so excited when Coach announced that I was selected as captain," said Williamson, a defender from Radnor, Pa. "It has been such a unique year so far, but our team is thrilled to play again. I have complete confidence in my teammates and I'm so grateful to have their support as well."
Captains are selected by a player vote. Williamson, Hendry and Matson are all returning starters for the Tar Heels, two-time defending NCAA and Atlantic Coast Conference champions.
"I'm so proud of Courtnie and the way she's grown and developed throughout her career," Shelton said. "Her field hockey game has grown, she's a great student, and she's respected by her teammates. As a leader, she's authentic and she's not afraid to tackle tough issues with the team, but she leads in a positive way.
"Amanda and Erin are also big-time leaders for our team, and it's great that we have the three of them spread over the field with Erin at forward, Courtnie on the back line and Amanda in goal. The team chose well and I think the three of them will do an outstanding job."
