Registered And Ready To Vote
September 21, 2020 | Women's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – When the five Tar Heel women's basketball freshmen arrived on campus in July, they quickly mastered the usual newcomer tasks of finding their way around campus and getting acclimated to classes. Some of them also tackled a broader life task: registering to vote.
It was part of a push to be sure the entire team is ready to take part in the November elections. The coaching staff discussed the idea over the summer, and in July made sure that each student-athlete had the resources to get registered if she was not already. As a result, all eligible voters on the team are now ready to vote this fall.
"Voting is one of our most fundamental rights and most important responsibilities as Americans," head coach Courtney Banghart said. "I'm proud to be associated with a group of people, players and staff so impassioned to contribute to the future of our nation. All Tar Heels will vote in this election and every election from here on out. As our team theme identifies: Strong on own, Best Together."
Alexandra Zelaya was one of the first-year Tar Heels who registered in July. She turned 18 in August and is excited about voting for the first time.
"All your life you hear about elections and learn about them in school so it almost seems surreal to finally be involved in one," she said. "This feels like one of the most important elections in history and I can't wait to be a part of it. While my vote is just one of many, I feel like this is a chance for my voice to be heard, and for me to take action that can benefit not only me but my loved ones."
Ariel Young, a redshirt sophomore from Tallahassee, Fla., was already registered but this election will be her first as a voter and she's excited about the prospect. "Voting is one thing that we can do as American citizens to have our voices heard," she said.
