Educate and Advocate: Saluting Frontline Workers
January 27, 2021 | Women's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Throughout the 2020-21 season, the UNC women's basketball team will highlight various causes, dedicating the year to advocating for and bringing awareness to issues that are near and dear to the Tar Heel student-athletes and coaching staff.
UNC plays at Louisville on Thursday and at Virginia Tech on Sunday, and the team has dedicated those games to saluting our frontline essential workers.
Some facts about frontline essential workers:
The CDC defines frontline essential workers as those likely at greatest risk of exposure to COVID-19. Their roles may require them to work within six feet of other individuals and they often do not have the option to work remotely.
These include health care workers, housekeeping staff, first responders, public safety officers, food services workers, government and community services officials, teachers and educators, transportation workers and many more.
We all can help keep them safe by taking precautions and working together to slow and stop the spread of COVID-19. It's important to wear a mask in public, stay six feet apart from others, avoid large gatherings, and wash your hands.
There have been almost 25 million cases of COVID in United States and over 416,000 deaths. In North Carolina, there have been almost 713,000 cases resulting in over 8,500 deaths.
Fortunately, vaccinations are underway across the country. The CDC recommends the vaccine and we encourage you to talk to your primary care physician with any questions or concerns. Here's more information on vaccines from UNC Health Talk.
This week our team wrote thank you notes and signed posters to deliver to workers. We'll be delivering treats to health care workers and volunteers at a local vaccination site to show our gratitude for their continued efforts in battling COVID-19. We also treated our Carmichael Arena housekeeping staff to thank them for their hard work keeping our home clean and safe!
The following organizations offer opportunities to learn more and make an impact.
• UNC Health COVID Resources
• Center for Disease Control (CDC)
• Orange County NC Website
Together let's express our gratitude to all of those on the front lines as we work together to stop the spread of COVID!
