January 30, 2021 | Women's Basketball
BLACKSBURG, Va. – The North Carolina women's basketball team will take on Virginia Tech Sunday for the second time this month. The teams tip off at 4 p.m. at the Hokies' Cassell Coliseum and the game will air on ACC Network.
For UNC (8-6 overall, 3-6 ACC), it's the second of back-to-back road games before returning to Chapel Hill for three in a row. The Tar Heels fell 79-68 Thursday at No. 1 Louisville and after Sunday will look forward to a string of home games against Florida State (Feb. 4), NC State (Feb. 7) and Boston College (Feb. 11).
Virginia Tech (8-7, 3-7) is coming off a homecourt win over No. 2 NC State on Thursday night.
The Tar Heels and Hokies are meeting for the 29th time in a series that dates back to the 1979-80 season. UNC leads 19-9 but the Hokies have won five of the past six, including the last three in a row.
• UNC's last win in the series came during the 2018-19 season in Blacksburg. Janelle Bailey had 21 points and 14 rebounds in that game and Stephanie Watts scored 17 points and hit three three-pointers.
• The last time the teams met in Blacksburg was Jan. 5, 2020, and the game ended in a 76-70 win for the Hokies. UNC was led by then-seniors Shayla Bennett (26 points) and Taylor Koenen (15 points). Current sophomore Malu Tshitenge had an outstanding shooting night, scoring 12 points on 6-7 shooting. Tshitenge and Bailey, who finished with seven points and nine rebounds, are the only current Tar Heels who played in that game.
• In the season's first meeting, the Hokies won 66-54 in Chapel Hill on Jan. 14, 2021. Freshman Deja Kelly scored 15 points to lead three Tar Heels in double figures. The Tar Heels equaled their season low with 54 points and were outrebounded for the first time in the season, 50-35.
For Virginia Tech, Elizabeth Kitley had 18 points (14 in the second half) and 14 rebounds. Cayla King came off the bench to hit five three-pointers.
• Sunday's game is the second of three UNC-Virginia Tech meetings scheduled for the 2020-21 regular season. The teams will meet again on Feb. 28 in Blacksburg, as a fill-in for Carolina's canceled game against Duke and Virginia Tech's canceled game against Virginia.
