Banghart Names Trio of Team Captains For 2021-22
October 11, 2021 | Women's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – At the start of a busy week, UNC women's basketball coach Courtney Banghart shared with her team some important information. With the Tar Heels gathered in their film room before the start of Monday afternoon's practice, Banghart announced that the 2021-22 team captains will be Eva Hodgson, Carlie Littlefield and Jaelynn Murray.
"Team leadership is the catalyst and accountability that serves as the driving force for a team's success," said Banghart, who in addition to her 15 years of head coaching experience owns a master's degree in leadership development. "We have a great group this season and all have spoken. Carlie, Jaelynn, and Eva have earned the honor to lead together. This trio has unique gifts and a collective voice. We are eager for their impact, and trust that they will lead competitively, compassionately, and with proven consistency all year long. We are in great hands."
The three, all graduate students at UNC, are charged with leading a young team that includes a total of nine sophomores and freshmen among its 14 members.
Murray, a redshirt senior athletically, graduated from North Carolina in May and is now enrolled in the Master of Arts in Educational Innovation, Technology, and Entrepreneurship (MEITE) program through the UNC School of Education. Hodgson and Littlefield are both in the MBA program through UNC's Kenan-Flagler Business School, Hodgson after graduating from William & Mary and Littlefield from Princeton. Hodgson joins the Tar Heels as a redshirt junior in eligibility, while Littlefield is in her final season of play.
The Tar Heels are working toward the season opener on Nov. 9 at home against North Carolina A&T. That game will kick off Banghart's third season in Chapel Hill, following up on an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2021. In addition to Hodgson and Littlefield, Carolina's 2021-22 roster includes four more new faces in freshmen Destiny Adams, Teonni Key, Kayla McPherson and Morasha Wiggins, all of whom are ranked in the top 20 in this year's incoming class.
The Tar Heels will take the court together for the first time on Friday at Carolina Basketball Late Night. The event begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Dean E. Smith Center and admission is free. Doors open at 6 p.m. For more info, click here.
In the meantime, junior Malu Tshitenge, sophomore Deja Kelly and Banghart will participate in Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Basketball Tipoff on Wednesday in Charlotte. Follow @UNCWBB on Twitter and Instagram for more.
