November 21, 2021 | Women's Basketball
FORT WORTH, Texas – Deja Kelly scored a career-high 25 points in a return to her home state and Alyssa Ustby grabbed a career-best 15 rebounds to go with 16 points as the North Carolina women's basketball team earned a 79-46 win at TCU on Sunday. With the victory at Schollmaier Arena, UNC improved to 4-0 on the season heading into this week's Thanksgiving trip to the Goombay Splash in Bimini, Bahamas.
For the fourth game in a row, the Tar Heels led wire-to-wire and held their opponent under 50 points. Grad student Carlie Littlefield got UNC on the board first with a three-pointer 54 seconds into the action, and the Tar Heels led 17-8 by the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter was the first one this season in which the Tar Heels haven't outscored their opponents. The Horned Frogs led 14-12 in the period as UNC hit just 25.0 percent of its shots and led by seven at halftime, 29-22.
Kelly came out of halftime on fire. She drew a foul and hit both free throws then completed a four-point play to account for six points in the first 37 seconds of the period. She totaled 13 points in the third quarter to establish a new career high with 23 in just the first 30 minutes of the game. (Her previous high was 22 points, on three occasions her freshman year.) Kelly, who had more that 50 family members and fans in attendance, added another jumper in the fourth quarter for her final total of 25, coincidentally also her jersey number.
The Tar Heels led by 20, 50-30, midway through the third quarter before TCU made a 10-0 run to draw within 10 in the closing seconds of the period. UNC junior Eva Hodgson hit a jumper to break the TCU run and take the lead back to 12 then got a steal to end the period.
Hodgson hit back-to-back three-pointers midway through the fourth period to boost the Tar Heel lead to 25 and Carolina continued to roll, outscoring the hosts 27-6 in the fourth period. Hodgson and Littlefield each scored nine points in the quarter to reach double-digits, both for the second time as Tar Heels. Littlefield finished with 14 and Hodgson with 11 to give UNC four players in double figures.
UNC finished with a 54-28 rebounding advantage, including 20-5 on the offensive boards.
Carolina made a season-high 18 free throws in 23 attempts, the team's best shooting percentage (78.3) of the season.
