UNC Set For Bahamas Matchup With VCU
November 25, 2021 | Women's Basketball
BIMINI, Bahamas – Pregame prep may look a little different, but the UNC women's basketball team has the same focus as always as it looks toward Friday's matchup with VCU in the Goombay Splash.
The Tar Heels (4-0) and Rams (2-1) face off at 1 p.m. in Bimini, at Gateway Christian Academy, just a short tram ride down the road from the resort where the team is staying. VCU and Washington face off Thursday afternoon, and Carolina and Washington meet Saturday in the final game of the round-robin event.
The games will stream live on FloHoops. Tar Heel fans can also catch the radio broadcasts here.
Back to Bimini
The Tar Heels are playing in Bimini for the second time in program history. They also traveled to the island during the 2016-17 season as part of that year's Junkanoo Jam event. UNC fell to South Florida in the opener then beat Minnesota to leave the island 1-1. The experience is brand new to the current Tar Heels, however: No member of the current travel party was part of the previous trip.
UNC vs. VCU
The Tar Heels and Rams are meeting for the third time overall and first time since the 2018-19 season. The two last met on Nov. 14, 2018, in Chapel Hill, were UNC won 59-47. Like Friday's game, that one was also an early tipoff: it was the Tar Heels' Education Day and tipped off at 11 a.m. with approximately 700 local fifth-graders in the stands as part of school field trips. The Tar Heels held the Rams scoreless for more than 10 minutes and went on a 20-0 run from the third to the fourth quarters to seal the win.
Current fifth-year senior Jaelynn Murray played 20 minutes off the bench (2 points, 5 rebounds) and is the only member of the team, including the current coaching and support staffs, who participated in that game.
Numbers of Note
• UNC has held all four of its opponents to single-digit scoring in the first quarter: NC A&T 8, Charlotte 3, App. State 4 and TCU 8
