Hitt and Gerard Shoot 70 in 2nd Round at The Prestige

Tar Heels Fourth Heading to Final Round
Fifth-year senior Austin Hitt and senior Ryan Gerard shot 70s Tuesday in the second round to keep the University of North Carolina in contention after 36 holes at The Prestige on the Greg Norman Course at PGA West.

Carolina is fourth in the 24-team field, trailing only three of the top-ranked teams in the nation. Pepperdine shot 5 under in the second round to lead the tournament at 8 under par. Arizona and Arizona State are tied for second at 5 under with the Tar Heels next at even par after a 2-over 286 today.

Those are the only four teams at par or better after two rounds.

The Tar Heels were 1 under par over their first nine holes today and 3 over on the second, during which UNC played through gusting winds and increasingly firmer greens.

Hitt is tied for 10th in the individual standings at 1 under par. He opened the tournament with an even-par 71 on Monday and made a team-high four birdies today in shooting 70.

Gerard was 3 under after 15 holes today and finished with a 70. He cut nine strokes off his score from the first round.

Freshman Peter Fountain continued his steady play with a second straight 1-over 72. He made 15 pars and one birdie this afternoon.

Ryan Burnett, Carolina's day-one leader with a 69, had three bogeys and 15 pars to shoot 74. The 2020 All-America is tied for 25th place.

Ludvig Aberg of Texas Tech is the individual leader at 6-under 136 after a 67 today. He leads David Puig of Arizona State by two.

The third and final round is Wednesday.

In The Prestige's individual tournament at Coral Mountain Golf Club, freshman Ryan Smith and sophomore Kenan Poole shot 3-under-par 69s today to climb the leader board. Smith is tied for 18th place at 1 under, while Poole and Dougie Ergood (73) are tied for 23rd place at even par.
