February 26, 2021 | Women's Lacrosse
CHAPEL HILL—Jamie Ortega had four goals and an assist and Katie Hoeg added two goals and five assists as No. 1-ranked North Carolina beat No. 11 Duke, 13-6, on a rainy Friday night at Dorrance Field. Carolina went on a 9-0 scoring run spanning both halves, blowing open what had been a close game.
UNC extended its winning streak over Duke to 11 games, dating back to 2015. The Tar Heels have averaged 15.5 goals in those games while holding Duke to 7.5 goals per game in those 11 consecutive wins.
The Tar Heel defense was stellar on Friday, holding Duke scoreless for a span of over 37 minutes as UNC expanded its lead from 4-3 with 12:24 left in the first half to 13-3 in the final 10 minutes of the game.
In addition to the offensive output of Ortega and Hoeg, UNC got three goals from Ally Mastroianni and a goal and an assist from Tayler Warehime. Kerrigan Miller, Caitlyn Wurzburger and Melissa Sconone each scored single goals, while Scottie Rose Growney had an assist before leaving the game with her second yellow card for a dangerous follow-through at the 11:47 mark of the first half.
Ortega's four goals gave her 195 in her career, moving her into second place in UNC history behind Abbey Friend (198).
Gabby Rosenzweig led Duke with two goals and an assist. Maddie Jenner scord a goal and had seven draw controls.
"The conditions tonight weren't ideal because it was so wet," UNC head coach Jenny Levy said afterward. "But I thought our defense played great once again. The Duke game tonight was fun. It was a fun game, and it was hard. It was a great opponent we looked forward to playing, and we look forward to playing on Sunday against Vanderbilt."
Tar Heel Taylor Moreno (4-0) went the distance in the cage for Carolina, making eight saves and holding the Devils to just three goals until the final five minutes of the game when the outcome was no longer in question.
Duke's Sophia LeRose (1-1) played all 60 minutes in goal, making seven saves.
UNC out-shot Duke, 28-18, and gathered 14 ground balls to the Blue Devils' 11.
Carolina will return to action on Sunday at 11 a.m. against Vanderbilt in Chapel Hill.
