Gray Shines In 24-13 Win Over Denver

CHAPEL HILL—The North Carolina men's lacrosse team defeated the University of Denver, 24-13, in its home opener thanks to an electric offensive performance.
North Carolina came out of the gates hot and never looked back. After giving up the opening goal, the Tar Heels stormed back to score seven unanswered goals, including five goals in the opening five minutes. The Tar Heels added on to their lead to go into halftime up,14-3.
The second half was more of the same for the Tar Heels. The third quarter saw the Tar Heels add seven more goals to their lead, making the score 21-6 entering the final quarter. Settling down in the fourth, North Carolina added another three goals to make the final score 24-13.Â
The offensive performance by the Tar Heels was one for the record books. North Carolina's 24 goals are the most ever allowed by Denver in a single game, surpassing the 21 goals allowed by Denver in 1999.Â
Senior Chris Gray led the Tar Heels on the day, scoring six goals on 12 shots and adding one assist. Jacob Kelly, Ryan O'Connell and Nicky Solomon each had three goals. Alex Trippi and William Perry each had a team high three assists.
Freshman goalkeeper Collin Krieg had 11 saves with only six goals against in his first career game for the Tar Heels, totaling a save percentage of .647.Â
The Tar Heels saw contributions from many different players, seeing 10 different players score goals and eight players recording multiple points.Â
Carolina's 1-0 start makes it the 23rd consecutive season the Tar Heels opened the season with a win.
The Tar Heels will be back in action next Saturday, at home against Jacksonville at 6 p.m.Â
