Fountain's 66 Leads UNC at Pinehurst

Tar Heels 2nd After 36 Holes
Peter Fountain and Austin Greaser combined to shoot 7 under par in Monday's afternoon round to lead the University of North Carolina men's golf team to the best 18-hole score of the day at the Wake Forest Invitational at Pinehurst No. 2.
The Tar Heels shot 7-under 273 in the second round, 19 strokes better than their opening round Monday morning and three shots better than Wake Forest's second-round 276. UNC is second in the 12-team field at the historic course. Tournament host Wake Forest is the leader after 36 holes at 3 under par. UNC is second at 5 over, Duke is third (+6), NC State is fourth (+11) and Virginia is fifth (+21).
Fountain is tied for second place in the individual standings after making six birdies and two bogeys to shoot a 4-under 66 in the second round. The freshman from Raleigh, N.C., is 2-under 138 after 36 holes, one shot behind Wake Forest's Michael Brennan. Fountain birdied four consecutive holes on the front side and was 5 under for the round after 10 holes, before closing with a 66.
Greaser bounced back from an opening-round 76 to shoot a bogey-free 3-under 67 in the second round. A sophomore from Vandalia, Ohio, Greaser parred all nine holes on the front before making birdies at 10, 12 and 18. It was Carolina's first round without a bogey this season.
Greaser and Ryan Gerard (73-70) are tied for 15th at 3-over 143 and Ryan Burnett (71-76) and Dougie Ergood (77-70) are tied for 28th at 7-over 147.
The third and final round is Tuesday.
