CHAPEL HILL – Behind three home runs, No. 18 North Carolina (9-4, 5-3) edged Clemson (5-7, 1-4) 5-4 on Saturday afternoon to clinch the weekend series after taking game one Friday evening.
Â
The Tar Heels showed fortitude to come from behind in game two after finding themselves down 1-0 after two innings of play. It marked the second-straight comeback win for North Carolina.
Â
UNC showed off its power in the fourth inning by blasting three home runs, a feat that had not been accomplished since June 1, 2019 against Liberty.
Â
Caleb Roberts led off the fourth frame with his team-high fifth home run of the season. The right fielder battled a 1-2 count and roped a line-drive home run just inside the right-field foul pole.
Â
After Brett Centracchio singled and Danny Serretti drew a walk, Clemente Inclan crushed a home run to right field. It was Inclan's third home run of the week after sending one over the fence against Liberty on Tuesday and again in game one against Clemson. He entered the week without a career blast.
Â
The Tar Heels hit back-to-back home runs when Will Stewart homered during the ensuing at-bat. It was the second career home run for Stewart and first of 2021.
Â
North Carolina led 5-1 after four innings on Bryson Field at Boshamer Stadium.
Â
The Tigers' offence proved patient all afternoon and drew 10 walks from Tar Heel pitchers. Clemson cut it to a one-run game in the fifth inning after drawing three bases-loaded walks.
Â
Nik Pry and Nick James each saw action out of the bullpen in the fifth, but it was ultimately Joey Lancellotti that worked the Tar Heels out of the jam. Lancellotti finished with 3.0 innings pitched which yielded one hit, no runs, three walks and three strikeouts.
Â
Lancellotti earned the decision for the Tar Heels and picked up his first win of the season.
Â
Freshman Max Carlson started the game for the Tar Heels and pitched 4.1 and surrendered three hits, four runs and five walks. He posted one strikeout.
Â
Carolina's bats were impressive top-to-bottom, as every Tar Heel that started the game in Carolina Blue registered a hit.
Â
North Carolina looks for the series sweep tomorrow on Bryson Field at Boshamer Stadium. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
