Myrtle Beach, S.C. – Austin Greaser made five birdies en route to a bogey-free, 5-under-par 67 to lead the University of North Carolina to second place after the opening round Sunday at the V1 Sports General Hackler Championship at the Dunes Golf and Beach Club.
Greaser was one of six Tar Heels who shot under par in round one. Peter Fountain was 3 under (69), Austin Hitt was 2 under (70), Dougie Ergood and Ryan Gerard were 1 under (71) and Ryan Burnett, playing as an individual entry, shot a 5-under 67.
The Tar Heels are two shots behind Louisville. The Cardinals shot 7 under on the back nine to take the lead at 13-under 275. Carolina led for much of the day , but faltered with five bogeys and a double-bogey on the last two holes. UNC had made only two bogeys and a double on the first 16 holes.
Kent State is third at 10 under, NC State is fourth at 9 under and tournament host Coastal Carolina, Indiana and North Florida are 4 under.
Greaser birdied the first, second, fourth and fifth holes to shoot 32 on the front nine, then added a birdie on the 12th to finish the day 5 under, one shot behind Kent State's Josh Gilkinson, Louisville's John Murphy and North Florida's Nick Infanti, who each shot 66.
It was the second time in as many tournaments Greaser played a bogey-free round. He also accomplished that in the second round at Pinehurst No. 2.
Greaser is tied for fourth with Burnett, who made six birdies and one bogey. Burnett made a 2 on the par-3, 175-yard 17th hole to get to 5 under.
Peter Fountain is tied for 11th, Hitt is tied for 16th and Ergood and Gerard are tied for 23rd place.
Second-round action is Monday and the final round set for Tuesday in the 54-hole event.
Carolina won the tournament in 2020.
