Women's Lacrosse Crushes Hokies, 22-1

BLACKSBURG, VA.—The No. 1-ranked North Carolina women's lacrosse team breezed past No. 13 Virginia Tech, 22-1, in its first road game of the season on Saturday afternoon at Thompson Field.
After leading, 12-1, at halftime, the Tar Heels controlled the second half, 10-0.
Jamie Ortega led the way with a game-high five goals and seven points for Carolina, which won its 14th consecutive game and improved to 7-0 in 2021, including 3-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
The Hokies fell to 2-3, 0-3. The two teams previously were scheduled to play an additional contest on Thursday in Blacksburg, but that game was postponed due to Covid-19 protocols in the Virginia Tech program.
Carolina improved to 30-0 all-time against Virginia Tech.
Carolina out-shot the Hokies, 31-11, including a 27-9 edge in shots on goal. Ten different Tar Heels scored goals with seven having multiple goals.
Aside from Ortega's output, Katie Hoeg added three goals and three assists, Caitlyn Wurzburger had two goals and two assists and Scottie Rose Growney had three goals and an assist. Elizabeth Hillman, Tayler Warehime and Shannon Smith all scored twice. Melissa Sconone and Ally Mastroianni each had a goal and an assist, and Kerrigan Miller scored once.
Taylor Moreno started in goal and played the first 38 minutes of the game, making three saves and allowing just one goal on six shots faced to improve her 2021 record to 7-0.
Kimber Hower played very well in the cage in the final 22 minutes, making three saves and not allowing a goal.
Carolina will return to action with a pair of games next weekend at Virginia Tech on Thursday and Saturday.

• Carolina won its 14th consecutive game. The longest winning streak in school history is 20 games.
• UNC scored double-figure goals for the 23rd game in a row and held its opponent to single digits for the seventh game in a row (every game in 2021).
