Fountain One of Five Tar Heels Under Par
University of North Carolina freshman Peter Fountain is 5 under par and is one of five Tar Heels to play the first 36 holes under par at the Arizona State Thunderbird Collegiate Invitational Friday at the Papago Golf Course in Phoenix.

Sixteenth-ranked Carolina is tied for sixth place in the 17-team field, 11 strokes behind TCU, which leads the field at 30 under par, and seven shots behind third-ranked Oklahoma State. The Horned Frogs were 20 under par in the second round.

Play was suspended due to darkness with three teams still on the course.

The Tar Heels shot 11-under-par 273 in the first round and 8-under 276 in Friday's afternoon round for a 19-under 549 total.

Fountain (67-70–137) is 5 under, Austin Hitt (70-68–138) is 4 under, Ryan Gerard (69-70–139) is 3 under and Ryan Burnett (73-68–141) and Austin Greaser (67-74–141) are both 1 under par.

Fountain and Greaser led UNC in the morning wave with a pair of 67s. Fountain made birdies on five of the first seven holes to shoot 31 on the front nine. Greaser was 1 under at the turn, then birdied three of the final four holes to post his 67.

In the second round, Burnett and Hitt shot 3-under 68s. Burnett was 3 under on the front and even on the back; Hitt went birdie-eagle-birdie on the 13th, 14th and 15th holes.

Gerard also made his first eagle of the season on the ninth hole in the second round.

Fountain is tied for 18th place, Hitt is tied for 25th, Gerard is tied for 34th and Burnett and Greaser are tied for 40th.

Dougie Ergood, an individual entry, shot even par in the first round and is 1 over through 16 holes in round two.

Completion of the second round and the third and final round is Saturday.
